VC/UHV Library Adds Texas Book Collection

The Victoria College/University of Houston-Victoria Library is pleased to announce the availability of an extensive collection of Texas history books donated to the library by the sons of Jack O. Miller, Sr. and Ellen Braman Miller. This collection, containing over 1,800 books, maps, and other materials, is designated as the ?Jack O. and Ellen Braman Miller Texana Collection? and is housed in the library?s Victoria Regional History Center. During the month of April, several volumes from this collection are on display on the first floor of the library located at 2602 N. Ben Jordan. For more information call 361-570-4150. The display: includes The King Ranch, by Tom Lea (limited edition with the ?saddle blanket? cover); The Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas, by John Henry Brown (1896); Cynthia Ann Parker, by James T. De Shields (1886); Texas, 1944-1845, by Carl Solms-Braunfels (1936); and Western Beef Cattle; a series of Eleven Paintings, by Tom Lea (1950). Jack O. Miller, Sr., a rancher and civic leader, was a member of an early pioneer family who came to Texas in 1823. He was born in Bandera County and later moved to Port Lavaca where he graduated from Port Lavaca High School in 1926. In 1935 he married Ellen Braman of Victoria. Mrs. Miller was an avid historian and genealogist and was quite active in the Texas Historical Commission and the Texas Genealogical Society. She served as a chair of the Victoria County Historical Commission and was active in numerous other historical organizations. Over a period of many years, the couple developed an excellent collection of Texana materials. Their sons, Stephen Miller of Chicago, IL, Daniel B. Miller of Port O?Connor, and Jack O. Miller, Jr. of Matagorda, have donated their parents? collection to the VC/UHV Library. The library is fortunate to be the recipient of this collection. The entire collection is available for research on the second floor of the library.
